Texans finally get to be adults!

A federal appeals court has overturned a Texas statute outlawing sex toy sales, essentially leaving Alabama as the only state with such a ban.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the Texas law making it illegal to sell or promote obscene devices, punishable by up to two years in jail, violated the Constitution's 14th Amendment on the right to privacy.

Companies that own Dreamer's and Le Rouge Boutique, which sell the devices in its Austin, Texas, stores, and the retail distributor Adam & Eve, sued in Austin federal court in 2004 over the constitutionality of the law. They appealed after a federal judge dismissed the suit and said the Constitution did not protect their right to publicly promote such devices.

In its decision Tuesday, the appeals court cited Lawrence and Garner v. Texas, the U.S. Supreme Court's 2003 opinion that struck down bans on consensual sex between gay couples.

The 5th Circuit Court's decision is encouraging for Sherri Williams, who has been fighting the issue in Alabama for a decade. Williams, who owns Pleasures stores in Alabama, sued in 1998 after state lawmakers banned the sale of sex toys there. A year ago, she lost her fight again when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to consider a lower court decision upholding the Alabama law as constitutional.

Williams hopes that lawmakers will take notice of the recent Texas case and support a newly filed bill in the Alabama Legislature to overturn the ban on adult toy sales.

"I think the courts are finally listening to the people," Williams said Wednesday. "You have 'Sex and the City,' 'Desperate Housewives' and other shows promoting what society is doing. I think the courts have finally opened their eyes and looked around, which is a miracle in the South."

Hey Texas! Click here and enjoy your new found freedom.

John McCain is in your bedroom (Eeewww!)

For anyone who thinks Republican Presidential candidate John McCain is a moderate on social issues, read this excellent post from Huffington Post. Clearly he believes in sexual freedom for himself (i.e. cheats on wife multiple times and then dumps her for rich blonde babe). But when it comes to your rights and freedoms, as is typical with many jackass womanizers, his views are a bit more medieval.

When asked about his position on reproductive rights, McCain told The National Review, "I think the important thing is you look at people's voting record because sometimes rhetoric can be a little... misleading." And there's no truer statement. McCain's voting record, which NARAL Pro-Choice America scrupulously tracks, is telling. He has consistently voted against the right to a legal abortion and he has also consistently voted against contraception. McCain voted to end the Title X family planning program which is the only way millions of Americans have been able to plan their family. Title X has also been heralded as having prevented more than nine million abortions in the last two decades. Without Title X, the number of teenage pregnancies would have been 20 percent higher, too.

McCain voted against legislation that would have required insurance coverage of prescription birth control and would also have provided more women with prenatal health care. (So, throw in anti-baby too. It's also worth noting that in 2004, McCain ranked among the 25 worst Senators for children, scoring 38%, according to the Children's Defense Fund Congressional Score Card.)

He's an unapologetic proponent of the failed abstinence-only approach as well. He voted against making "abstinence-only" programs medically accurate (the most authoritative study found that more than 80% of abstinence-only curricula, used by more than 2/3 of federal recipients, contains false, misleading, or distorted information.) He also wanted to take $75 million from the Maternal and Child Health Block Grant to launch an abstinence‐until-marriage program that prohibits sexually active teens from learning about birth control. Yet another time he tried to route one‐third of all HIV/AIDS prevention funds to the completely ineffective "just say no to sex" programs.

It's clear; Iraq is not the only unpopular war Bush started that McCain hopes to continue. The war on Americans' sex lives is another and McCain has already proven himself a good, loyal general.

Sex in Design/Design in Sex

The "Sex in Design/Design in Sex" exhibit, which showcases everything from aesthetic pleasure objects to art, fashion and household items, opened Jan. 31 at the Museum of Sex in New York.

Curator Sarah Jacobs says the exhibit was inspired by a trend in which a sex toy's aesthetic value is just as important as its functionality.

"I've been noticing a trend in the increase in products coming out that are focused on the design of the look of the product," she says. "People are recognizing that sexually related objects can be based on their aesthetic value instead of just being designed for the novelty aspect."

Among the pleasure objects featured in the exhibit are the Fleshlight by Interactive Life Forms, items from Fun Factory, the Yva from LELO, the Onye from Big Teaze Toys, the Pvibe Jewel and Ben Durrell's Unisex Toy.

Romance on the job?

HAVING an office romance IMPROVES your quality of work, a survey claims.

Researchers found the thrill of a fling “raised energy levels and led to better professional capacity”.

One in five people quizzed by Italian sexologist Serenella Salomoni admitted to an affair at work.

She said: “We discovered that people who had an office romance said they were happier, more energetic and more productive.”

Nearly twice as many women as men admitted to having a fling in the workplace, Dr Salomoni added.

One in three owned up to having a relationship with a superior to enhance their career.

I wonder if this holds true for countries other than Italy? How many of you out there have had workplace romances?

Hookers Get More Business From Republicans

Political tricks may not be the only ones turned during the Democratic National Convention in Denver this August. The sex and adult entertainment industries are expecting a boom in business when an estimated 35,000 visitors descend on the Mile High City for the presidential nominating bash.

Too bad for Watson and others like him that Denver didn't land the GOP convention instead, said Carol Leigh, a San Francisco prostitute "over 50" who has traveled to previous Democratic conventions in Los Angeles and Atlanta. "It would be a lot better for the sex workers if it was the Republican convention," she said. "We get a lot more business. I don't know if they're just frustrated because of the family values agenda," she said.
